World Mental Health Day for Education and Awareness.

World Mental Health Day  – 10 October

This day is set for mental health education and awareness. We also use this day to advocate against social stigma associated with mental health issues by raising awareness of mental health matters in a global context.

We should be looking for “Tools to Thrive” to support our mental health and well-being.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that we need to take mental health seriously. This is more so relevant now as we go through the impact of the pandemic.

We need to understand that those living with mental health issues deserve care, understanding, compassion, hope, healing, recovery, and fulfillment.

By raising mental health awareness we can help individuals understand their symptoms. This will enable them to find professional treatment as appropriate. Many people suffer in silence because of the mental health stigma.

We need to empower ourselves and our communities with information, tools, skills and support to overcome this.

Here is some information I came across that I found to be very helpful.

Ten Things You Can Do for Your Mental Health

  1. Value yourself –  Make time for you.
  2. Take care of your body  – Nutrition, exercise and rest.
  3. Surround yourself with good people  – Have strong social and family connections.
  4. Give of yourself  – Volunteer or do things for others.
  5. Learn how to deal with stress – Practice good coping skills.
  6. Quiet your mind  – Meditation and relaxation techniques will help.
  7. Set realistic goals  – Break down your goals into achievable smaller steps.
  8. Break up the monotony – Routine is good for the discipline but be spontaneous and bring in different moments.
  9. Avoid alcohol and other drugs – Do not use to cope or “self medicate.”
  10. Get help when you need it – There are many support solutions. Reach out.

It is within your control to do what is best for you. Be brave. You can overcome this.
